HEDY LAMARR (1914-2000), once called the "most glamorous woman in the world", was a successful
    screen actress
in Europe from 1931, and in Hollywood, California, from 1937 to 1958.
Her most famous European film was
    "Ecstasy"
(1933),  In Hollywood, she co-starred with
    Charles Boyer
    in
    "Algiers"
    (1938),
    Clark Gable
    in
    "Boom Town"
    and
    "Comrade X"
(both in 1940). Also in 1940, she starred with
    Spencer Tracy
    in
    "I Take This Woman"
. In 1941, she made two films with
    James Stewart
    ,
    "Come Live With Me"
    and
    "Ziegfield Girls"
    .
Lamarr was invited to play opposite
    Humphrey Bogart
    in
    "Casablanca"
, but turned down the offer, which was accepted by
    Ingrid Bergman
.  In 1949, she produced a memorable performance as
    Delilah,
    starring opposite
    Victor Mature
    in
    "Samson and Delilah".
She also became famous as an
    inventor and scientist
, most notably inventing the "spread spectrum" radar-jamming technique for altering radio frequencies on torpedoes, for which she received a patent from the U.S. Patent Office in 1942.  The concept has also been used in cell phones, military radios, wireless computer links, and Wi-Fi.
