    Description

Up for sale is a very humorous advertising ink blotter card promoting a company that did foundation work in a city where having a stable foundation means a great deal!  It measures 9 inches wide by 4 inches tall, suggesting that it was mailed in a standard business envelope.
The Atlas Foundation Co. was located at 3131 Chartres (Street) in New Orleans, Louisiana.  [NOTE:  The city and state are not mentioned.  But Chartres is in New Orleans, where I obtained this card.]  According to the card, it provided the following services:
    -Residential pile driving
    -Concrete foundations
    -Steel erection
    -Crane service
    -Excavation
The majority of the card focuses on residential pile driving.  There is a GREAT cartoon showing the outcomes when Atlas installs (or does not install) the piling foundation upon which a home is built.  The cartoon has the caption:
    Find the man
    who has a
    PILING FOUNDATION
    by
    ATLAS
On the left side is a drawing of a home that is slanted and sinking.  The hapless husband is being scolded by his wife.  On the right side, a home has completely sunk to the level of the roof.  The family is using a ladder for access to ground level.  The married owners are having a similarly animated (but subterranean) conversation.  In the center, a happy gentleman stands in front of the home built on an Atlas piling foundation, with the home standing straight without any sinking.
New Orleans is largely below sea level and is surrounded by water.  It receives more than 60 inches of rain per year, often in torrential downpours.  Many a home (and a business) in this water logged environment has suffered a foundation failure requiring expensive shoring repairs.
This card is not dated but was found among a group of similarly sized cards, many of which can be accurately dated to the 1945 to 1955 era.  It is noted that the phone number (BY 6441) has only 6 characters.  (The "BY" was the local exchange and stood for "BYwater", a neighborhood fairly close to the French Quarter.  The address 3131 Chartres St is located in this neighborhood.)  My research shows that, for New Orleans, the old 2 letter exchanges were replaced by 3 numbers (thereby lengthening the phone number from 6 to 7 characters) between 1955 and 1960.
Please see above for full description of condition and for photos.  Sold as is.
