Description

KM 2, one year type, issued for the Saar region. Quarter dollar size aluminum-bronze coin with an industrial scene on the obverse.
The coal-rich region, which is on the border between France and Germany, had changed control many times through history.  The area was controlled by France after World War II, even though a plebiscite in 1935 had said that the inhabitants wished to be part of Germany.  The area was returned to Germany in 1957.
