Description
We know the Ideal Hat & Cap Leather Co. was founded at 37 W. Fourth St., on the lower end of Manhattan, in late 1921. It was capitalized for ,000, a lot of money at the time. At some point during the 1920s, it moved a couple of blocks north to 367 W. Fourth. From there it disappeared off the face of the earth, suggesting the company went out of business before or during the Depression years. To keep its wholesale hat and cap leather customers up to date, it probably gave away this brass ink blotter with the new address at some time in the 1920s.The rolling brass blotter is 5 x 2.5 inches (13 x 6 cm) long and wide and 1.5 inches from the blotter to the top of the handle (3.5 cm). The felt has slight pilling from age but is in remarkable condition as the photographs reveal. No ink stains so it was used on top of another blotter or piece of paper (or never used). The brass patina is nice with no nicks, chips, or serious scratches. Solid construction. The advertising is on the top of the handle, engraving and an enamel oval name plate attached in the middle. Everything is still very legible. A great piece for ink and blotter collectors but would look good as an old-time or modern day desk accessory. Could be used to help seal envelopes or to roll and adhere something glued.
