Description
Up for sale is a nice vintage advertising ink blotter issued by the A-1 Employment Service, Incorporated of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was clearly distributed to employers (not to job seekers) and promises them that there would be no charge to the employer. (So very different than modern employment agencies!) This blotter measures a little over 8.75 inches wide by about 4 inches tall and was likely placed in a standard business envelope.I believe this ink blotter to be from the late 1940s. Evidence includes that it was found in a collection of other ink blotters dating from the same era and that the phone number on the card (CAnal 4241) has a two letter exchange followed by only four numbers.
I couldn't find out too much about the A-1 Employment Service during the era when this ink blotter was issued. However, I believed that the company survived at least until the 1970s. Perhaps its most notorious job seeker was Lee Harvey Oswald, who - on May 6, 1963 - completed an employment application, a document that became an exhibit for the Warren Commission after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of that year.
When the American Bank Building (also known as the National American Bank Building) was completed in 1929, it was the tallest skyscraper in New Orleans, standing 23 stories tall, not including a 6 story octagonal tower and golden finial. (The offices of A-1 Employment Service would have been on the 21st floor.) It is located at the corner of Carondelet Street and Common Street in the Central Business District. After decades of commercial use, the building became vacant by 2000. After Hurricane Katrina (2005), the building (which had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986) was repurposed in 2008 as a mixed income residential apartment building and is now known by the name "200 Carondelet".
Please see above for full description of condition and for photos. (There is a condition issue related to folding and curling at one corner.) Sold as is.
